A&DO – Learning Centre for Architecture and Design 2020–2023

What was A&DO?

Architecture and design belong to everyone, and we are constantly surrounded by them. A&DO – Learning Centre for Architecture and Design was a joint project co-managed by the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Museum Helsinki in 2020–2023. The project seeked to make information, competence and professionals of architecture and design available to all interested parties.

By doing so, we seeked to improve the understanding that Finns have of architecture, design and environmental planning. The tools of architecture and design learning were used in the process. The project simultaneously seeked to develop the activities of the museums. Good living environment, shared planning efforts and accessibility were important topics of the project.

A&DO – Learning Centre for Architecture and Design was developed in 2020–2023. The Finnish Cultural Foundation granted the project the ‘Museovisio’ grant. The project also contributed to establishing a network of architecture and design educators which will cover the whole country.

Who were in the target group of A&DO?

We all use built and designed environments and are, as such, their best experts. We can solve problems, whether big or small.

Wonder. Play. Experiment. Explore.

What did A&DO offer?

A&DO Lab – Good Neighbourhood

A&DO Lab was a touring learning environment and exhibition focused on themes of design and architecture. The exhibition space located in two containers challenged to think of what kind of architecture and design promotes high-quality everyday life and sustainable development. The goal of the exhibition was to encourage to take a critical look in one’s own environment.

The nation-wide A&DO Lab exhibition toured Finland in 2021–2023. One could also explore the Lab exhibition virtually with the materials available on this website.

In 2024 A&DO Lab exhibition has become part of the joint D-Ark Lab of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum Helsinki. D-Ark Lab is an experimental space that invites you to explore museums’ collections in exciting new ways and to share your views and input on museums’ exhibits.

Seminar

The national level A&DO seminar on architecture and design learning was organized every autumn. The first seminar took place in Tampere in October 2021. The seminar offered a complete overview of creative and critical approaches to architecture and design. Both Finnish and international cases were examined. The seminar’s working methods included workshops where participants could get actively involved.
